Empowering Himalayan Youth: H.E.L.P. and NATHM’s Trekking Guide Training Opens New Opportunities in Nubri and Tsum

In 2024, we Himalayan Environment and Life Protection (H.E.L.P.) in partnership with the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hospitality (NATHM) gave 2 x 10 days porter trekking guide and local guide training to 22 young men and women of Nubri and Tsum in November in Samagaun.

The trainings’ objective was to give education opportunities to youth who did not have the required education level (class 10 and 12) to attend a trekking guide training but still with a good level of English to be able to train as porter trekking guides (assistant guide) and eventually graduate to become trekking guides in their own rights after 4 years of work experience. This also aimed at opening employment opportunities for youth from remote Himalayan regions in Nepal and enable them to follow a government certifying course so they don’t have to migrate abroad in search of better economic opportunity.

13 youth who had passed class 10 and 12 and attended the November trainings in Samagaun were motivated to go to Kathmandu on a scholarship and attend the fully-fledged trekking guide 35-days trainings from December to January in NATHM headquarters.

Last week, we received the visit of Pemba in Samagaun, one of our participants of the trekking guide training who has been actively working this Spring season. We also heard from Tashi and Dolkar who have been using their licenses and from Dhorje, one of our beneficiaries from the porter trekking guide training who has been working continuously since our training (see pictures)!

We are proud of our alumni and wish them all the best in their budding guide careers!
